Overview
Gossypium is an interesting genus from the perspective of genome size evolution.
Despite its relatively young age (5-10 million years old) and conserved complement of genes,
DNA content varies more than three-fold within the genus. In an effort to determine the
dynamics of genome size evolution in Gossypium, we have embarked on a comparative BAC
sequencing project. Preliminary results from the allotetraploid cotton, Gossypium hirsutum
indicate a high degree of conservation between the A and D genomes.
